Eye care specialists in El Salvador

Home >> What we do >> Services >> Unit of Low Vision

The visual rehabilitation service has been designed for those patients who suffer an alteration of the visual function even after treatment and/or standard refractive correction, and have a visual acuity of less than 20/70 perception of light, or a visual field of less than 10 degrees from the attachment point, but that he/she is potentially able to use that vision for the planning or execution of a task.

The purpose of this unit is to optimize the use of this residual vision of these patients for some specific activities like reading, to look at a blackboard, to make crafts, etc. through the use of unconventional optical aids as magnifying glasses and telescopes or non-optical aids like lighting control or activities of daily life, accompanied by psychological support so that both the patients and their families accept this type of rehabilitation.

It is important to explain that this unit does not retrieve the vision; the patient will not be able to lead his/her life as before the visual loss, but will be given support on specific tasks as their visual condition allows. It is also very important to make it clear that this service does not replace the eye treatment that is being provided by his/her doctor, but rather complements it.

All FUDEM patients previously referred by an ophthalmologist or optometrist, who has verified their visual condition or outpatients who come with a medical reference which states his/her status and its causes, can receive the attention.

With this technology that we make available to all of our patients, we can identify any pathology in its initial, intermediate or advanced state, to be able to make the pertinent medical interventions.
