What causes astigmatism?

Could be inherited (when it appears at birth it generally presents high calibration)The cornea becomes progressively thinner and cone shaped – keratoconus.Degeneration of the sub-epithelial tissue in the conjunctiva that causes traction, in other words, Pterygium.Scar tissue in the cornea, due to, for example, a surgery like cornea transplant or cataracts.

SYMPTOMS

  • Blurred vision of images regardless their distance
  • Red eye
  • Dandruff-like scales on eyelashes

Astigmatism is a refractive error that can be treated with the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses. I can also be corrected with a refractive laser surgery, which is more expensive and has a surgical risk.
